Mold toxin illness is one type of biotoxin illness. Biotoxin illness is an umbrella term for illnesses that are caused by exposure to neurotoxins from biological organisms. The most common cause of Biotoxin Illness is mold, via exposure to water damage buildings. This used to be known as Sick Building Syndrome. The second most common cause is Lyme Disease, coinfections, and other tick-borne illnesses. Other biotoxins that can cause illness include dinoflagellates, like red tide; Pfisteria, which can cause Possible Estuary Associated Syndrome (PEAS); cyanobacteria in fresh water lakes; and Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP). Exposure to any of these biological agents can cause acute illness. In a certain proportion of the population, these illnesses can become chronic. When this happens it is an inflammatory issue that can cause many symptoms in many areas of the body. The inflammation can impact our immune system and our ability to make hormones. Thanks to research by Dr. Shoemaker people with this issue do not have to stay sick. We now have specialized testing, which can provide me with not only a diagnosis, but also with a roadmap to treatment so that you can return to optimal health.
